For those of you who don’t know my full time job has now become managing my e-commerce business that is growing by the year, last week I decided that I needed a bigger and badder e-commerce platform. One that could handle thousands of products with ease. Don’t get me wrong I love my woo-commerce website and I find it’s a great entry level for e-commerce development, but when you get to a certain amount of products it simply becomes too difficult to manage. It just cannot handle the volume that Magento does.
So I made the painful choice of building a Magento 2 store (still under construction) and let me tell you that the Magento 2 platform is outstanding it has everything you need to run an e-commerce business and integrates with tons of different APIs, comes jam packed with multiple product options, has a cart recovery system, an abundance of reports, and much more. BUT let me also tell you that building a Magento 2 website is not for the feint hearted, and I found that out the hard way. I figured hey, I’ve built plenty of websites before, how difficult could it be. Little did I know how complex Magento 2 was going to be.
This leads me to my post topic which is why I’ve compiled a bunch of Magento 2 tutorials that helped me through this complex process.
Tutorial 1: How to install PHP, Apache, MySQL and Magento 2 on MacBook Pro
This was the main tutorial for me and how I got started. I have an iMac so was a perfect tutorial and it teaches you how to get your development environment setup too. While you don’t have to use this same dev setup you could skip ahead and see how he installs Magento 2.
Tutorial 2: Magento 2 Tutorials for Beginners, Free Online Training Course.
This is a site dedicated to magento 2 tutorials, if you need tutorials on Magento2 just to get your feet wet. This is the course for you, plus its free.
Tutorial 3: Magento 2 Tutorial / User Guide
Honestly, there is quite a limited amount of information out there on Magento 2 so I often found myself using Mageplaze as a go to resource. It was not by choice, but most of my searches brought me to this site and it helped with all the basics to getting setup, to much more in depth tutorials.
Tutorial 4: How to install Magento 2 with Sample Data
I selected this tutorial as it’s quite a crucial tutorial to helping you get started. Here you’ll learn how to install magento 2 with the sample data so you can see what a functioning site looks like. This tutorial is by Mageplaza.
Tutorial 5: Magento 2.3 Developer Documentation
Not the most exciting tutorial, but I used this developer documentation more than anything above. Especially for getting it installed as I had a bunch of problems. Magento 2.3 is quite complex so I highly recommend reading the installation guide here. and of course if you need more answers go over and ask a question on stackoverflow.
As much as I’d want to put together more tutorials, I didn’t use more than these 5 as there is such a limited amount of resources out there for Magento 2. I used Stackoverflow for a lot of my questions, but hopefully you won’t have too. Please don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter below to receive these kind of posts in your inbox.
